W616S (AR16026:S1719-052-2-B-B-B-20-1-1-1-B) was developed from the breeding population identified as AR16026:S1719-052 provided by the USDA Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) project. This particular inbred line was initiated in summer nursery 2005 by the UW Corn Silage Breeding program, and was generated after at least six generations of inbreeding, hybrid evaluation, and testing. The selection criteria utilized to generate this line included high forage yield and good nutritional characteristics. The combination of superior forage yield and composition provides the opportunity to increase the potential milk yield productivity of ruminant animals that are fed with hybrids produced using this line.
