Inbred Releases

W601S - W604S

Four inbred lines from WQS C0 and C1 have been released. W601S (S5 = 53062-2-11-1-1) was developed from WQS after the first cycle of selection. W602S (S5 = 80063-1-2-3-1), W603S (S5 = 80259-2-2-1-1) , and W604S (S5 = 80353-2-3-5-1) were developed from WQS after the second cycle of selection. Selection for all lines was initiated at the S2 stage of inbred development, at which time they were evaluated in topcrosses to LH119 (W601S) and LH198 (W602S, W603S, and W604S). These lines were also topcrossed at the S5 stage to inbreds LH198 and HC33. The topcrosses were evaluated in several field environments and selected on the basis of forage yield, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), in vitro true digestibility (IVD), in vitro NDF digestibility (NDFD), protein, starch, and, as a result, milk production potential.

W601S - W604S are approximately 50% Lancaster background and 50% broad-based high-quality germplasm from northern temperate regions. The inbred lines combine well with lines derived from the Stiff Stalk heterotic background to provide average to high yielding hybrids with good nutritional quality.

In 2004, the performance of W601S-W604S was evaluated in trial NEWINB. These inbreds also appeared in trials HC33, LH198, LH227, and LH244. Hybrids involving W602S and W604S were evaluated in the 2004 UW Corn Performance Trials conducted by the UW Corn Extension program. The hybrids were designated:

EX03 = W602S X LH227

EX04 = W602S X LH198

EX05 = W604S X LH227

EX06 = W604S X LH198

EX07 = W604S X HC33

In 2005, the performance of W601S-W604S hybrids were evaluated in trial NEWINB. Hybrids involving W604S were included as checks in a number of other silage trials. Hybrids involving W601S, W602S, and W604S were evaluated in the 2005 UW Corn Performance Trials conducted by the UW Corn Extension program. The new hybrids were designated:

EX08 = W604S X LH244

EX09 = W602S X LH244

EX10 = W601S X LH244

In 2006, the performance of W601S-W604S hybrids were valuated in trial NEWINB. Hybrids involving W604S were included as checks in a number of other silage trials. Hybrids involving W601S, W602S, and W604S were evaluated in the 2006 UW Corn Performance Trials conducted by the UW Corn Extension program. The new hybrids were designated:

EX28 = W604S X LH227

EX30 = W601S X LH244

EX31 = W604S X LH244

EX32 = W602S X LH244

EX33 = W601S X LH332

EX34 = W604S X LH332

W605S

Inbred line W605S (S6 = AR17026:N1019-65008-2-3-2-1-1) was developed from a breeding population provided by the USDA Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) project. In 1996, the UW silage breeding program initiated inbred development from this breeding population. W605S was selected for nutritional composition on both an inbred per se and hybrid topcross basis during six generations of inbreeding. W605S combines well with inbreds from the Stiff Stalk heterotic group. W605S is characterized by high forage yield in hybrid combination, above-average IVD, above-average NDFD, and high milk/acre.

In the 2004, hybrids involving W605S were evaluated in trial GEMADV and also in the 2004 UW Corn Performance Trials conducted by the UW Corn Extension program. In the latter case, hybrids were designated:

EX01 = W605S X LH244

EX02 = W605S X LH198

In the 2005, hybrids involving W605S were included as checks in a number of other silage trials, and EX01 appeared in the 2005 UW Corn Performance Trials conducted by the UW Corn Extension program.

In the 2006, hybrids involving W605S were included in NEWINB and also as checks in a number of other silage trials. The following hybrids appeared in the 2006 UW Corn Performance Trials conducted by the UW Corn Extension program.

EX27 = W605S X LH244

EX35 = W604S X LH332
